Hello Weston on Trent

Derbyshire Police’s Community Speed Watch scheme enables trained volunteers to work together to monitor speeds and encourage safer driving. Weston on Trent has a successful and active group, but they are now seeking additional volunteers to join the team.

Many of our volunteers join because they care deeply about the community they live in. They want safer roads for children walking to school, families crossing the road, cyclists, horse riders, dog walkers and elderly residents. By giving just a small amount of their time, volunteers help encourage drivers to slow down and make their neighbourhood a safer place for everyone. Community Speed Watch isn't about catching drivers out or issuing fines. It's about protecting the people, pets and places that matter most to us and showing that our community values road safety.

How does it work?

Groups of trained volunteers carry out highly visible speed monitoring sessions at approved locations

Details of vehicles exceeding the speed limit are forwarded to the Community Speed Watch Team

The registered keeper receives an educational letter advising that their vehicle has been recorded speeding

In some circumstances, a Police Officer may make a personal visit to reinforce the message

Benefits

Helps deter speeding at the location and surrounding area

Enables educational letters to be sent to drivers recorded speeding

Provides evidence of speeding problems that can support police enforcement and traffic management measures

Demonstrates that residents are no longer willing to tolerate excessive speed in their neighbourhood

Contributes to making speeding socially unacceptable and improving road safety for everyone

"We volunteer because this is our community. We want safer roads for our children, grandchildren, neighbours, cyclists, dog walkers and everyone who lives here. Community Speed Watch isn't about punishment - it's about encouraging drivers to slow down and helping make our streets safer for everyone."
